The Low GI Diet is one of the most popular diets currently around. While it was originally developed in the 1980’s as a way to help diabetes patients control their disease it was found that it also provided numerous other benefits including the promotion of weight loss.

The idea behind the diet is to fill your diet with foods that are low on the glycemic index rather than foods that are high on the index. Compared to many other diets the Low GI Diet is actually much easier to follow; however, there are some tips that can help you to make the process simpler and less complicated.

While many people get started with the Low GI Diet believing they must only select foods that are low on the GI scale there is another important component that can help you to achieve better results. Under the Low GI Diet you can easily select cereals and breads as long as they are comprised of wholegrains. These foods rank low on the glycemic index because whole grain foods tend to be digested slower by the body. This is a good way to also boost your intake of fiber, which can result in lowering your cholesterol level as well as changes of heart disease and cancer.

It’s also a good idea to try and replace a small number of large quantity meals with more small meals during the day. Low Carb Diets are common diet plans followed by weight watchers. However, is it advisable for teens?

Carbohydrates are important part of the diet. Foods rich in carbohydrates provide the body with energy to fuel up activities. Excellent sources of carbohydrates include rice, grains, fruits and vegetables. The extra amounts of carbohydrates taken are stored in the muscles and liver as glycogen. There are simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are categorized based on the time it takes for the body to digest them. Simple carbohydrates are easier to digest as compared to complex carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are highly essential during the growing and developing years. However, excessive intake of carbohydrates can also lead to weight problems.

Teens that have a sedentary lifestyle are unable to burn the calories from carbohydrates that they take. One of the best diet modifications that they can follow is to have small but frequent meals. It is also healthy to include complex carbohydrates in the diet by eating vegetables and whole grains.

Low carbs diet should not be done by teens without a physician’s or dietician’s advice. Never follow advertised diet plans that highlight low carbs in order to achieve weight loss. The effect of these diet plans is temporary and you will easily gain back weight after discontinuing the program.

Remember that insufficient carbohydrate-intake among teens can be harmful because their body can be depleted of energy and nutrients they need.  Most teens combine low carbs diet with high protein diet. This diet has high fat content. The body will need extra energy to digest the proteins and in the long run, the kidney can become affected secondary to overwork.

Medical researches prove that low carbs diet is not advisable for teens. One example is when the excess protein in the body use up the body’s calcium stores which in turn impedes the growth of the person during his/her developmental and growth years. It is for this reason the low carbs diets are not recommended for teens unless a doctor prescribes it.
